Bacterial Discrimination

QIAGEN announces the launch of its BLU-V Viability PMA Kit, which uses propidium monoazide (PMA) to permit differentiation of live and dead microorganisms at the DNA level. Selective intercalation of PMA within dead cell DNA inhibits amplification, allowing a clear distinction between living and dead microorganisms. When used with the BLU-V System, the DNA of dead organisms can be neutralized through the use of photoactivation of PMA, and the detection of the DNA of living cells can be accomplished by conventional or real-time PCR.
